Celebrating Our Seniors
Each year in the first week of June, the Government of Alberta declares Seniors’ Week in Alberta. So from June 2-8th, the Consort & District Family and Community Support Services celebrated our local seniors! Each of our events encouraged positive socialization and to help our local seniors feel connected to their communities.
On Sunday, June 2nd we gathered with thirty seniors from Altario, Consort, and Veteran to enjoy a lovely brunch at the Gem Centre in Consort. We served pancakes with all the fixins’, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, and fresh fruit! We were happy to have Consort Mayor Michael Beier in to visit with the seniors and give a warm welcome speech. Mayor Beier spoke about the impact our local seniors have on our communities, as their hard work and dedication has built our surrounding communities over the years!
On Monday, June 3rd we enjoyed an Ice Cream Social at the Consort Lodge, along with 20 local seniors. On Tuesday, June 4th we hosted a Seniors’ Supper in Veteran at the Community Hall. We had 70 seniors from Altario, Consort, Veteran – and even a few from Coronation! There were warm welcome speeches from our FCSS coordinator, Lacey Abt, as well as Jan Allison who is the representative for Veteran Town Council. After the meal we finished the night with door prizes, purchased with money from donations. It was a wonderful evening and we were surprised to see such a large turnout!
On Wedneday, June 5th we held a make & take afternoon at the Consort Lodge. We made fairy gardens with 10 of the residents, and we had many onlookers who stopped to visit and compliment the creations. Later that night, we partnered with the Lodge to have Wes & Wendy stop and entertain the seniors. On Thursday, June 6th we joined Dina at the Lodge for outdoor games in the morning. Mrs. Bousquet brought the Altario kindergarten class as well. Paul & Myda Smawley taught the kids how to play ker-plunk and jenga! Later that afternoon we watched Going in Style at the Gem Centre with Lodge residents. It was a fun-filled day! On Friday, June 7th we finished off the week with a Coffee Talk & Info session at the Lodge. We bribed the residents with donuts so Bonnie McIntyre from Service Canada could discuss financials and taxes with them. They were happy to oblige!
We have many sponsors to thank for this week! Thank you to our corporate sponsor, the Consort Lions Club, for your generous donation! It was their contribution that funded the groceries necessary for the brunch. To our gold sponsors: the Veteran Lions Club, Golden Prairie Hotel & Lodge, DistributionNOW, Consort Agro Services, Consort Oilmen’s Association, and Roger E. Johnson Enterprises. And to our silver sponsors: Compass Sign & Safety, Consort Enterprise, and Gateway Junction. Our gold and silver sponsors funded our door prizes, the snacks and refreshments, rent, and any other supplies necessary. Consort & District FCSS is a non-profit, so it is because of these monetary donations that this week was possible! We are extremely grateful for the support!
We also have many volunteers to thank for this successful week: The brunch was made possible by our volunteers Christian Dafoe, Karlee Abt, Dawn Trussler of Dryland Cattle Corp, Brenda Stickel, and Mayor Michael Beier. Thank you to the Consort Ladies Auxillary for donating the ice cream for our social. A huge thank you to Caroline Tkach of Aa Catering who prepared our roast beef supper – it was delicious! Thank you to Jan Allison to speaking to the attendees before our supper, and to Ron Allison for saying grace. Our make and take was helped along by Jessica at the Lodge. Thank you to duo Wes & Wendy for coming out to Consort once again. And to Bonnie McIntyre for the information session! And last but certainly not least, to Dina Nelson, who was there to help us with each Lodge event. Dina, we appreciate you!
Going in to these events, we never know what numbers to expect. So it was gratifying to see so many seniors able to attend our events. Thank you to everyone who attended! Consort & District Family and Community Support Services covers the communities of Kirriemiur, Altario, Consort, and Veteran. We are a non-profit community support and referral service. This week would not have been possible without the support of our community and local donors! If you ever need assistance with paperwork, form filling, food bank intake, seniors benefits, AISH, income support, general tax assistance, or if you wish to donate to our non-profit – please contact us at 403-577-3011, or contact our coordinator Lacey directly at firstname.lastname@example.org or visit us at 5231 50th Street, Consort, Alberta.
